Answer: Inclusive education (inclusion) is a system of educational services that educates a child with special educational needs in a mainstream school setting, as well as socialising and integrating him or her into society.

According to the International Classification of Educational Standards, persons with special educational needs have special educational needs whose learning needs require additional resources. These resources may be:

staff (who assist learners);

materials (a variety of teaching aids);

financial resources (for additional services).

Who are children with special needs?

Some researchers consider this concept quite broadly and include not only children with special developmental needs, but also gifted toddlers, children deprived of parental care, and those who survived a war or moved from another country (region).

It is worth noting that, in Ukraine, the main category of children with special educational needs are those who have special developmental needs:

with visual impairments (blind, visually impaired);

Hearing impaired (deaf, hard of hearing)

With speech disorders;

With mental retardation;

with locomotor disorders; with mental retardation

With mental retardation

with complex developmental disabilities (including autism spectrum disorders).

The aim of inclusion is to create conditions for the personal development of children with special needs and to create an educational and developmental environment for them. That is, in an inclusive school, it is not the child who adapts to the requirements of education, but the education system changes for the sake of the child. This approach eliminates discrimination and ensures access to school for all children.

What are the advantages of inclusive education?

A higher level of social interaction with peers (compared to children in special schools);

Improved social competence and communication skills;

Higher academic achievement (as a consequence of a richer curriculum);

social acceptance of the child; friendly peer relationships.
