The methods of the research are determined by the general purpose of the work and employ: a hypothetical-deductive method (to distinguish the lexical, grammatical and stylistic peculiarities of the writer's idiostyle), techniques of the component (linguistic study of meanings of words and concepts) and contextual (study of the meaning of words in a particular context) analyses as well as the analysis of translation means.
The material for the research is A. Huxley’s novel “Brave New World”, and its translations into Ukrainian (S. Marenko) and Russian (O. Soroka).
The theoretical and practical value of the work, in our opinion, lies in the fact that its results can be used in the courses of Literature Studies and Translation Studies, as well as by students in their course papers and graduation theses.
Statements to be defended:
1. Individual style is interpreted as a collection of language-expressive means that perform aesthetic function and distinguish the language of a separate writer among others.
2. Aldous Huxley is one of the recognized masters of the “intellectual novel”, which focuses on analyzing a particular intellectual problem and on the inner world of the character. The dystopian novel “Brave New World” is the highest point in the development of the writer’s genius of A. Huxley.
3. A. Huxley gives the reader an idea of the world of the future with all its advantages and disadvantages, depicts the degradation of the human mind in terms of standard life and mass production, and highlights all the problems with the use of epithets, metaphors, inversions, comparisons, allusions, satires and irony, emerging in such a caste, standardized, dehumanized “society of overconsumption”.
4. The analysis of the ways and transformations used to reproduce the linguostylistic peculiarities of A. Huxley’s idiostyle testifies to the dependence of the translator's actions on his understanding of the writer’s idiostyle, which, in turn, determines the relevance of the translation to the author’s style.
The purpose and tasks of the research determined the structure of this graduation thesis. It consists of an introduction, three parts, conclusion and references.
The first part “The writer’s idiostyle: lexicogrammatical and linguostylistic peculiarities” analyzes the concept of the idiostyle of the writer, examines the lexical and grammatical features that help in its reproduction, direct attention is paid to the to the means of reproduction of the idiostyle of Aldous Huxley.
In the second part of the research “Characteristic features of A. Huxley’s idiostyle” we describe the individual style of Aldous Huxley and give the examples from the novel “Brave new world” according to each of the author’s techniques or peculiarities that appear there.
In the third part of the research “Methods of realization of A. Huxley’s idiostyle in Ukrainian and Russian translations” the comparison of original stylistic techniques and their Ukrainian/Russian equivalents is performed.
The conclusion summarizes the conducted research.
Approbation of the research results. The research results have been reported and discussed at the Students’ Scientific Conference which took place at People’s Ukrainian Academy on April …, 2019. The main conclusions have been given in the article “Aldous Huxley's individual style in Ukrainian translations” published in “………….” in 2019.
