Perception Perception - the sensory perception of external objects by man. According to G.-V. Leibniz, perception is distinguished as a simple direct idea of the external world and apperception - as a higher form of cognitive activity associated with self-awareness.

Features

1) the activity of the subject of social perception, which means that he is not passive in relation to what he perceives, as opposed to the perception of non-beings. Both the object and the subject of social perception influence each other, seek to transform the idea of themselves in a favorable direction; 2) the integrity of what is perceived indicates that the subject's attention is focused not on the moments of image generation as a result of reflection of reality, but on meaningful and evaluative interpretations of the object of perception;

3) the motivation of the subject, indicates that the perception of social objects is characterized by a more pronounced combination of cognitive interests of the subject with his emotional attitude to those who are perceived. 4) group perception of another group (or groups). The process of social perception is the activity of its subject to assess the appearance, psychological characteristics, actions and deeds of the person being observed.

Depending on these ideas, the subject predicts his attitude and behavior in different situations of interaction and communication with other people.

Сausal attribution

People who know each other are not limited to obtaining information through observation. They seek to find out the reasons for the behavior of communication partners and to find out their personal qualities. But since the information about the person obtained as a result of observation is often insufficient for reliable conclusions, the observer begins to attribute the probable causes of behavior and character traits of the communication partner.

This causal interpretation of the behavior of the observed individual can significantly affect the observer.

Halo effect

Formation of an evaluative impression of a person in conditions of lack of time for the perception of his actions and personal qualities. The halo effect is manifested either in the form of positive evaluation bias (positive halo) or in negative evaluation bias (negative halo). Thus, if the first impression of a person as a whole is successful, then in the future all his behavior, traits and actions begin to be overestimated in a positive way.

Effects of novelty and primacy

The effects of novelty and primacy are closely related to the halo effect. These effects (novelty and primacy) are manifested through the importance of a certain order of presentation of information about a person to form an idea about him. The effect of novelty occurs when in relation to a familiar person is the most significant of the latter, ie, newer information about him. See also Stereotypes about the difference of generations or how to find an approach to any employee The effect of primacy occurs when the first information is more significant in relation to a stranger.

Stereotyping

Perception and evaluation of social objects on the basis of certain ideas (stereotypes). Stereotyping is manifested in the attribution of oriental characteristics to all members of any social group without sufficient awareness of possible differences between them. Stereotype - a simplified, often distorted, characteristic of the sphere of everyday consciousness idea of a social group or individual belonging to a particular social community. The stereotype arises on the basis of limited past experience as a result of the desire to draw conclusions on the basis of insufficient information. Most often, stereotypes arise about a person's group affiliation.

Attraction

When people accept each other, certain relationships are formed with the included emotional regulators - from the rejection of a person to sympathy, friendship, love. Social attraction - a special kind of social attitude towards another person, which is dominated by positive emotional components. There are three main levels of attraction: sympathy, friendship, love. Attraction of manifestation in emotional attractiveness, attraction of one person to another.

Definition:

The concept of social perception can be described as follows: it is the perception of one social unit of another. Psychology shows us the mechanisms by which we communicate, build relationships, characterize and understand what to expect from a person, not only based on his personal qualities, but also assessing his social affiliation. To do this, our subconscious is based on a system of social stereotypes - stable ideas that arise within one of the social communities - the group.
