Smth to learn and smth to do

Доброго ранку. Для підготовки до ЄВІ я пропоную. Вам деяку інформацію і вправи до опрацювання. ( у різних студентів різний рівень англійської, тому я намагатимусь робити пояснення українською)

Task 1. TO LEARN Hire vs Rent vs Let

These three words are all verbs. They all relate to paying for the use of something.

Hire  -арендуємо щось на короткий термін
When talking about a short-term arrangement, we normally use the verb hire.

  • We’ve decided to hire a car for the day.

  • We’re going to hire a bouncy castle for my son’s party.

Rent –арендуємо щось на тривалий час
In English, we normally use the verb rent to talk about a long-term arrangement.

  • We’re going to rent for the next few years, while we save for a deposit to buy our own house.

  • A lot of people think that renting is a waste of money, but it means you have less responsibility.

Let -надаємо дозвіл користуватися власністю
The word let means 'that you give permission to use some property, like a house, in exchange for regular payments'.

  • My landlady is very fair and lets the house to use for a good price.

  • There are more flats to let than to buy in this street.

    1. Complete this sentence:

To see the city, we’ve decided to ______ a bike for a couple of hours.

      1. Rent b) let C) hire

      1. Rent b) let C) hire

    1.  House are so expensive in this area. I can’t afford to buy, so I need to _______.

      1. Rent b) let C) hire

Task 2. TO LEARN Try + -ing or to + verb

In English, when two verbs are used together, the first verb dictates which form the second verb should take regardless of the tense of the first verb or the subject of the sentence. (коли 2 дієслова стоять разом, форма другого дієслова буде залежати від першого дієслова)

Some verbs can have more than one corresponding verb pattern and this can change the meaning of the second verb.

Try is like this - its two verb patterns have different meanings.

+ING
When we use try + -ing ( ми намагалися щось зробити і у нас все добре), all we're saying is that we attempted to do something.

  • I tried baking a cake

  • They tried making sushi for the first time yesterday.

Full infinitive
When we use try + to + verb ми намагалися, але нам було складно, чи у нас не вийшло), we're saying that a task is quite difficult to complete, or that we've failed.

  • I tried to bake a cake.

  • I tried to call for help, but no one could hear me.

Task 3. TO LEARN How to use 'too' and 'very'

Both too and very are intensifiers (підсилюють щось). They are used to make adjectives (прикметники) and adverbs (прислівники) stronger.

Very
When we use very (не має значення чи ми описуємо, щось, що є добрим або поганим) it's not clear whether what we are describing is a good or a bad thing.

The building is very old.

This could be a good thing: 'the building is old and beautiful'. It could also be a bad thing: 'the building is old and falling down'.

Too
When we use too (означає, що є проблема), it means there's a problem.
