Censorship against freedom of speech

To fully understand the issues of censorship and freedom of speech and how they apply to modern media, we must first explore the terms themselves.

Censorship is defined as suppressing or removing anything deemed objectionable. Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information, on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or "inconvenient". Censorship can be conducted by a government private institutions, and corporations.

In other word, censorship is when an authority (such as a government or religion) cuts out or suppresses communication.

A common, everyday example can be found on the radio or television, where potentially offensive words are “bleeped” out. More controversial is censorship at a political or religious level.

If you’ve ever been banned from reading a book in school, or watched a “clean” version of a movie on an airplane, you’ve experienced censorship.

Types of Censorship:

Moral censorship is the removal of materials that are obscene or otherwise considered morally questionable.

Military censorship is the process of keeping military intelligence and tactics confidential and away from the enemy.

Political censorship occurs when governments hold back information from their citizens. This is often done to exert control over the populace.

Religious censorship is the means by which any material considered objectionable by a certain religion is removed.

Corporate censorship is the process by which editors in corporate media stop the publishing of information that portrays their business in a negative light.

Many countries provide strong protections against censorship by law, but none of these protections are absolute and frequently a claim of necessity to balance conflicting rights is made, in order to determine what could and could not be censored.

When there is freedom of speech and freedom of the press, most information can published. However, even in developed countries with much freedom of the press, there are some things that cannot be published.

Freedom of speech is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction. The term "freedom of expression" is sometimes used synonymously but includes any act of seeking, receiving, and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

Freedom of speech is the right to state one's opinions and ideas without being stopped or punished. Freedom of speech is thought to also include Freedom of information. However, new laws are usually needed to allow information to be used easily.

A well-known liberal thinker, John Stuart Mill, believed that freedom of speech is important because the society and goverment that people live in has a right to hear people's ideas.

But now in Ukraine government do not allow free speech: they do not want to be criticized, or they fear there would be revolution if everyone knew everything that was happening in the country.

Many factors contribute in putting freedom of speech under risk and danger starting from international laws, religious laws, international agreements, defamation and slander.

As a result, this will affect the accuracy of the news in which every media outlet will cover the incident or the event from its leader’s/owner’s or political party’s point of view which lead to distortion of the truth that is given to people.
