Carrie reached Dearborn Street where the great Fair store with its crowds of shoppers was. She thought she would go in and look at the jackets. She paused at each article of clothing and imagined how pretty she would look in this. She also stopped at the jewellery department. She saw the ear rings, the bracelets, the pins, the chains. But the jackets were the greatest attraction. When she entered the store, she already had her heart fixed on a jacket with large mother of pearl buttons. The saleswoman helped her on with it. It fitted perfectly. It was just her size, not a bit loose. Carrie turned before the glass. She could not help feeling pleased as she looked at herself. It was so becoming. After she had asked the sales woman how much it was. She took out one of the bills and gave it to the cashier. Then Drouet (her friend) advised her to buy a purse made of leather, a pair of gloves and stockings. Carrie thought that she would come the next day and buy herself a skirt to match the new jacket. Shopping Pete and his mother went shopping. They ran out of vegetables and bread in their house. So mother asked Pete to go to the greengrocer`s and to the baker`s. Pete noticed that they had to go shopping too often. The day before yesterday his sister Nelly made all the purchases. She went to the grocer`s and to the butcher`s. Pete said that girls are so fond of shopping and offered Nelly doing it. Mother answered he was always lazy. It was so difficult to make him go anywhere. She announced the shopping list and gave Pete some money. Also she reminded him not to forget the change. Pete asked if he had ever forgotten. Mother explained that he was so absent minded. Pete realized his teacher said the same and promised to do his best. “Jean`s First visit to the theatre” The story is about shy men who was afraid to invite a young lady Jean to the theatre. He was afraid she would refuse his invitation but she had accepted it. He was also doubted if she would come as her religion didn`t allow to go to the theatre. When they met she looked excited and her eyes sparkled. Although the tickets were not expensive, they could see the stage quite well. It was a melodrama full of hopeless love and heroic self sacrifice, a play after Dickens`s novel “ A Tale of Two Cities “. Jean`s eyes were full of interest and delight when she saw the actor`s play. During the interval she couldn`t stop talking about the play and how splendid it was. At the last scene was under way they sat hand in hand as though to support each other. Jean couldn`t keep her tears. When the play come to its end there was a storm of applause but Jean was too overcome to join in such a banal applause, her fillings were too deep for words. Only when they were in the street she whispered how much she had enjoyed herself. A Telephone Conversation Nick called Helen. She picked up the phone and noticed that Nick sounded a bit annoyed. She asked if there was something the matter. Nick explained he had been trying to get connect with her for nearly ten minutes. She didn’t think the line was engaged. But he said it was, besides he got the wrong number several times. Helen was sorry. Nick asked if Helen had got anything special on tonight. Helen didn’t and he suggested them going to the theatre. Helen would love that and was wondering what were they going to see. Nick said he had got 2 tickets for ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’ by Oscar Wilde. It was the first night, Nick had heard the play was worth seeing. Helen wondered about the seats as she hoped they were not in the balcony or in the gallery. Nick explained they were in the dress circle, box 5. Helen hope they would enjoy themselves. They agreed that Nick would call her as he didn’t like waiting. So did Helen but she loved to look smart when she went to the theatre. Nick said he would call her at 5.30 so they had plenty of time to get to the theatre before the performance started. That suited Helen perfectly and she said she would be waiting for Nick. She was thankful for his invitation. Dialogue Alice was a little late for the meeting with Mike. But he said it was all right since she was there. She asked Mike to do her a favour and meet Mary at the station. Mike was glad to help but he had never seen her. He asked how he could possibly recognize her. She described Mary to be just like her mother. Mike said that it was helpful but the trouble was he had never seen her mother either. Alice didn`t have any photos of her. Mike asked Alice to describe Mary. Alice described her as a tall slim girl of 18 with an oval face, fair and curly hair. Light grey eyes, small snub nose, a big mouth with white even teeth and a pleasant smile. Mike predicted there would be at least a dozen girls like that at the station. But Mike asked how he was to recognize her in the crowd. Alice forgot to mention there was a dimple in her left cheek. She added he would fall in love with her at first sight. Mike promised to be on the platform at five sharp looking for a tall slim fair haired lovely girl with a dimple in her cheek. |
